Ireland seems beyond the reach of winter?s icy grip in this true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from January 4, 2003. The rugged cliffs that mark the island?s west coast are showing their red-brown rocky surface, but the low-lying interior region is still wearing the island?s signature green.

Thousands of people march in Londonderry, Northern Ireland Sunday, January 30, 2000, in memory of the 13 who were shot dead by British paratroopers in the city in 1972 in an event known as "Bloody Sunday". Soldiers' claim they fired after being provoked by Irish Republican Army gunmen - an assertion accepted by a 1972 investigation - have long infuriated Catholic residents of the city, who insist the soldiers fired first and killed only unarmed people. The massacre was a defining moment in Northern Ireland's past three decades of conflict.
