Can the worlds of business and science merge to spur development of an ultra-fuel-efficient automobile? While actual designs may still be science fiction, the X Prize Foundation believes a $10-25 million prize could bring the concept to life. Auto X Prize Rules At A Glance
Energy and Emissions Requirements
To win the Auto X Prize, teams achieve the following:
  • Fuel economy at least 100 mpg
  • Total Greenhouse Emmisions(GHG) of C02: no more than 200 grams per mile
  • Safety: Vehicles must meet safety regulations in U.S. and other markets
  • Cost: Vehicle cost at a production rate of 10,000 units per year must be within levels that the market is likely to bear
  • Features: Vehicles must be desirable, addressing the most important features and factors consumers want
  • Business Plan: Clear and viable business cases for bringing their vehicles to market
  • Win one of two long-distance road races in 2009
